Arup Design for Chongqing Airport Gets Go-Ahead from Chinese Government
The team led by Arup, with Llewelyn Davies and Speedwing, have gained acceptance from the People's Government, for their prize winning design for the new terminal at Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport in the Peoples Republic of China.
The team had beat off fierce competition from five other entries to win first prize in an international design competition, awarded by a Chinese Expert Selection Panel, at the end of last year. Prior to this, the design had been given considerable support having been backed substantially by Trade Partners UK, the British Embassy in Beijing and the Consulate in Chongqing. In addition, the UK Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott, after a recent visit to Chongqing, had also written to the contract awarders, to further fly the flag for this team.

Chongqing, a city state with a population of 30.7million, is the gateway to the North Western provinces. The first phase of the airport expansion will comprise a 65,000m² terminal complex and extensive landside/airside infrastructure to handle 8 million passengers a year. A second phase development will further increase airport capacity to 15 million passengers a year. With an estimated cost of £200 million, the project is seen as a key venture for the Chinese Government in their development plans for inland China.

On receiving this acceptance, the Arup-led team will now progress further with contract negotiations and design development.
